It's been a strange year for games. Tons of people hated this year's game selections, with not enough AAA, and too many games that didn't to live up to their hype, but many others loved this year, and as for me, I fall into the latter category. This year was not only a year to enjoy the offerings of great AAA and indie titles, but to discover some missed classics as well and without delay, I want to show you my personal Best of Gaming 2014 selections.
The Story Driven

I don't really even play games for story driven experiences. You'll find I disagree with a lot of critics on GOTY choices because gameplay was never up to snuff in those games (lookin' at you Naughty Dog), but surprisingly enough, there was one game series that released two games this year, that I absolutely fell in love with. And that series was Danganronpa, with two games released in the series so far.
As far as story-driven games go, Danganronpa's Battle Royale/Hunger Games' style combined with a brilliantly written villain and characters is near perfect and the best story-driven games I have played this year, besting every game in it's category. Is it niche? Yes. Is it worth playing? Absolutely.
The Gameplay Driven

Did you honestly expect anything different? I've loved every single Platinum game, sans that terrible Korra cash-in (I blame Activision), since they started developing games. They are an incredible developer and the fluid combat, combined with the pure raw action of Bayonetta 2 make it my pick for the best gameplay driven game this year.
The over-the-top story may not really grab you, but the combat is so addicting, and so much fun. I have finished the story twice now, and plan to comeback in order to play on higher difficulties. This is a game I'll be jumping into frequently, just to kick some demon and angel ass.
The Indies
I am a huge advocate of indie games. I will never deny that 80-90% of indie games are probably not worth looking at, but the ones that are worth looking at, are really worth looking at, and this year, two indie games really shine and give even more promise to what the indie community is capable of.

The first one is a game I can really dig. A real ground breaker. I bet these puns make you wanna put me six feet under. Shovel Knight is an amazing retro platformer. One that not only is amazing fun, but has some of the best music I've heard all year. All retro inspired tunes, retro inspired games, come together for one hell of a great package.

SuperGiant keeps doing what I wish more game devs would do and that's getting rid of most cutscenes and incorporating story telling through amazing gameplay. You don't need to have cutscenes to tell a story, says Bastion and Transistor. No, it's all done through the game, through a voice, through music, and through atmosphere. And while I only started the game recently, I'm already in love.

And this being the final indie that I sunk hours into before my PS+ expired. And what a way to end it. Something about Velocity 2X kept me hooked for days. The music? The fantastic gameplay? Getting perfect medals each level? All of that was just phenomenal.
The Recommended

So not all the games I played this year were from 2014, as you can imagine. In fact, one game specifically, that I consider one of the most fun games I've played this year, and one I am still having tons of fun with is Kid Icarus: Uprising.
The cheesy humor, the spectacular combat, and the interesting controls are have me pretty hooked. Recommended by a few friends, this was probably the best recommended purchase for a game I've received this year, and a game I'll certainly be playing for a good while.
The Surprise

I'm not a fighting game fan by trade. I suck at them. Mortal Kombat? BlazBlue? King of Fighters? Not my thing. But one fighting game came along that got me having tons of fun with it. So much that I was genuinely shocked how good it was, and that game was Persona 4 Arena Ultimax.
I never really played much of the first, but this game was so accessible to someone who didn't really play fighters, that I just couldn't put it down for days. The game was also oozing fanservice, and as a gigantic Persona 4 fan, I loved every bit of that.
The New Addiction

So while the year may have not treated all of us well, one game did get under my skin, one I play during aaaaaaaaaaaaall my downtime, and that's Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. I like FPS games.
I love competitive ones too, and with the letdown that is Halo: The Master Chief Collection, CS:GO came along and filled that hole in my heard that yearned for an amazing FPS multiplayer experience, and is one game where I barely miss a day of play.
The Disappointments
Well this year did have it's fair share, and whether it's connection issues, or purchases I personally regret, you'll get all that here. Not necessarily bad games are here, but just ones I sort of wish I didn't buy into so quickly. We can start with a Level-5 game called Fantasy Life. A game that I thought was cute, but after around 10 hours of play, doing chores just got very dull. The MMO-like structure and the very sparse areas without much to do really left me bored. I expected this game to be my new Animal Crossing, but it certainly didn't reach that level at all.

Another game I wanted to play hours of was Halo: The Master Chief Collection. But the bugs, the issues, the lag, and the waiting hours to get a single match just made me lose faith in the entirety of the series. I'll be back for the Halo 5 beta, you can beta on that, and if all the rumors of the game being much better than before are true, it'll be staying on my Now Playing list for a while.

Now I may get a few stare downs here, but Final Fantasy X just doesn't hold up well for me. I got 11 hours into the game and never picked it up again. I just don't find the characters that interesting nor am I a huge fan of the story. It was a decent purchase, but one I ultimately regret. Nostalgia here should stay tucked away.

To conclude, this was a fantastic year for games, with something for everyone, and I hope you enjoyed this Best of 2014 post, and this year of gaming in general.
